REVIEW: Dark Tower Series

Dark Tower Series; Stephen King

One of my favorite series is The Dark Tower by Stephen King. In fact, I'm' re-reading Wizard and Glass for the umpteenth time, and my first and only (for now) tattoo is from the gunslinger (and boyfriend has TWO tower related tattoos. Yeah. We're geeks.)

Anyway, in hopes of sparking some interest in the series BEFORE it becomes mainstream with a potential upcoming movie/miniseries franchise that (as much as I'm excited for it) will completely break my heart if everyone suddenly decides to get into it (like Harry Potter) and misses the deep connection we "Tower Junkies" have had with it for years.

Enjoy the review, rock lobsters. Long days and pleasant nights.

--------

"The man in black fled across the desert, and the gunslinger followed."

The Dark Tower series is Stephen King's magnum opus.
Or to put it in lamen's terms- his life's work.

And that's saying a lot considering he has written 55 books spanning from short story collections, fictional novels, and 2 non-fiction publications.

The Dark Tower series is a complex tale following the character Roland Deschain- also known as The Gunslinger. When we first meet Roland he is pursuing "The Man In Black"; a mysterious unnamed man. We do not know why Roland pursues him- only that Roland appears to be driven by something powerful. The setting of the story varies throughout the books, but is primarily set in an alternate universe that has "moved on". Unlike your typical sci-fi series, it has an old-west feel to parts of it, and the parallels between Roland's world and our own are easily catchable.

While the presence of magic and foreign technology is found in this series- it's written in a  highly relatable and believable manner. King has also done an incredible job creating characters that readers can truly develop a relationship with and their personal complexities add depth and meaning to every aspect of the tale. This action-packed story is indeed complicated. But ENTIRELY worth it.

The series of seven books are as follows:
The Gunslinger, I
The Drawing of the Three, II
The Wastelands, III
Wizard and Glass, IV
Wolves of the Calla, V
Song of Susannah, VI
The Dark Tower, VII

I highly recommend this series to ANYONE who enjoys a good read; each book is completely different from the last and always keep you guessing.
It is by far the best series I have ever read and I genuinely enjoyed each book and look forward to reading them time and time again.
